Blood Pressure and Homocysteine Lowered by N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)

SUMMARY: Four weeks of oral N-acetylcysteine (NAC) at 1800 mg/d in middle age men in a double-blind placebo controlled trial significantly lowered total plasma homocysteine levels, irrespective of the subject’s lipid levels or smoking status, and, lowered systolic blood pressure in men with both normal and high blood fats, with significant diastolic blood pressure reductions in the high homocysteine group only. Increased oral intake of cysteine (or NAC) may therefore be considered for primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease with regards to the 2 independent risk factors studied – high homocysteine blood levels and high blood pressure.  Oral N-acetylcysteine reduces plasma homocysteine concentrations regardless of lipid or smoking status.
