Red Yeast Rice, which comes from fermenting rice with Monascus purpureus, contains the cholesterol lowering monacolins, of which monacolin K (about half of the total monocalins) has been renamed Lovastatin. 10 mg of monacolins (containing about 5 mg of monocalin K) in the form of red yeast rice once daily with berberine 500 mg 2-3 times daily can lower significantly cholesterol, triglycerides, improve metabolic syndrome, glycemic control in diabetics, and be an effective combination product to reduce the cardiometabolic risk in cardiovascular, diabetic, obese and metabolic syndrome patients with minimal side effects. “Red Yeast Rice Plus Berberine: Practical Strategy for Promoting Vascular and Metabolic Health.” Altern Ther Health Med. 2015;21 Suppl 2:40-5. 51045.
