Dr. Joel Fuhrman reviews results of a patient survey and case studies from his practice of patients at cardiovascular risk who applied his Nutrient-Dense, Plant-Rich, Diet-Style (NDPR) and noted a compliance of greater than 80% with the NDPR diet resulting in an average sustained weight loss of more than 50 pounds in 75 obese subjects. There was a corresponding average reduction of 27.8 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure for the 127 survey responders with untreated hypertension at baseline, and a 42.2 mg/dL average decrease in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol for the 328 survey responders, not on cholesterol reducing medications. These results from survey responders and cases suggest the potential for the NDPR dietary intervention to improve weight, blood pressure, lipids, and even reverse severe cardiovascular disease. Though this is a report of cases and self-reported benefits, it adds evidence to support the need for further studies investigating the potential of this dietary intervention. “Improved Cardiovascular Parameter With a Nutrient-Dense, Plant-Rich Diet-Style A Patient Survey With Illustrative Cases” Joel Fuhrman, MD, Michael Singer, BS, American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, 2015:20(10);1-10. Doctor Fuhrman emphasizes eating nutrient dense foods as a means to reduce not only heart disease but all chronic diseases. This is highlighted by his Health Equation – Health = Nutrients/Calories. Another acronym he uses to encourage healthy eating is to eat G-BOMBS – Greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds. He also notes that the more produce a society eats the healthier they will be, and the U.S. population must change its current 5-10% of calories as produce, 55% processed foods, and 30% animal foods to ideally 90% or more produce and less than 10% (or less) of calories from animals foods to be healthy and reverse chronic diseases, including heart disease. Dr. Fuhrman believes heart disease is not a natural or inevitable byproduct of aging, but comes from our current, modern, industrialized diet and lifestyle.
