AverTeaX formulation (topical lipophilic epigallocatechin-3-gallate) applied six to eight times daily containing lipophilic catechins effectively inhibited herpes simplex labialis infection resulting in a significant reduction in clinical duration (median 4.5 days vs. 9 days) and shortened blistering and ulceration stages within an episode (median of 3 days to 1 day). Quality-of-life scores were better in the treated group for duration of itching and duration until symptom free. Adverse effects were not reported. These positive effects occurred if the AverTeaX formulation was applied to the lips immediately with the beginning of symptoms. “Topical lipophilic epigallocatechin-3-gallate on herpes labialis: a phase II clinical trial of AverTeaX formula,” Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol 2015;120:717-724. 51119 Stephen Hsu, MA, PhD, Georgia Regents University, CB2040, 1120 15th St., Augusta, GA 30912, USA (706) 721-4816 / (706)721-9415 (FAX) shsu@gru.edu
