Physical Activity in Elderly Men is as Powerful As Stopping Smoking!

Physical Activity and Mortality – In following 5738 elderly male survivors from the Oslo I Study starting in 2000 for 12 years (Oslo II Study) it was found that 30 minutes of physical activity, regardless of the intensity, 6 days per week was associated with a 40% reduction of death from any cause; and those men that did moderate to vigorous activity during their leisure time lived 5 years longer. The authors equated this health benefit to that of stopping smoking. “Increases in physical activity is as important as smoking cessation for reduction in total mortality in elderly men: 12 years of follow-up of the Oslo II study.” Br J Sports Med. 2015 Jun;49(11): 743-8.
