Ken Stone is a 55 year old male vice president of a large concrete construction company based in the Dallas, Fort Worth area whose grandfather died of a heart attack at the age of 78, his father died at the age of 68 undergoing open heart surgery, who had high cholesterol and had been on Crestor since the age of 40. Other than being overweight he had no cardiac symptoms until having chest discomfort at the age of 53 with subsequent stenting of 3 of his coronary arteries and was initially told he would be a bypass candidate.
His best friend and cardiovascular surgeon, Staton Awtrey, MD, (Midland, Texas) said he had serious coronary disease and was a bypass candidate, but there was another way if he wanted to totally commit to a whole food plant based diet without added oils and nuts as recommended by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn from the Cleveland Clinic in his Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Program. (A Way to Prevent CAD? The Journal of Family Practice. July 2014 Vol 63, No 7 page 257).
He and his wife Patti have totally committed to this dietary (lifestyle) program as outlined in Dr. Esselstyn’s book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, including eating leafy greens six times per day with balsamic vinegar (to increase nitric oxide) and exercising 45 minutes daily (DrEsselstyn.com).
He lost 50 lbs in the first four months on this program without trying, his Crestor (statin) has been cut in half, he remains on a blood thinner and he feels great (just ran the Dallas Turkey Trot 2 days ago) and says this lifestyle change was not hard at all when he put into perspective what he was faced with – a strong family history of coronary artery disease, his own bad disease, and he wasn’t a grandparent yet.
His message is don’t rely on doctors to take care of your health. Your are totally responsible for it so act now with diet (a whole food plant based diet) and take the time to exercise daily.
